Every warp-thread can be lifted or lowered over its own "harness-strings". In this way the weft-thread will be laid over or under the respective warp-threads with the next "weft". If using differently coloured weft- or warp-threads you can weave a coloured pattern with this method which will appear inverted on the backside. |

The white part above the machine are the harness-strings. There are about 4000 on the machine. They are running from here to the control mechanics. underneath the hall ceiling. The orange-red ends tell you which warp-threads are lifted at the moment. We all know that time is money and you can imagine that such a machine isn't working all too fast. This is why the weaving-method "Jacquard" has disappeared from the mass-market and is now only used for high-quality weaving. |
